GENIE programme (Generalization of Information and Communication Technologies in Education)

Context and Issue

As the school closure policy was implemented due to the pandemic, several countries had to adopt alternative methods to ensure distance learning. Similarly, in the case of Morocco, the government introduced such methods to ensure education delivery. Online learning was the key medium to ensure learning; however, in some cases, television was used to ensure learning continuity. 

Solution 

The GENIE Programme Generalization of Information and Communication Technologies in Education) was structured in a way that aimed to provide digital infrastructure to the classrooms. Secondly, it focused on capacity building of the teaching staff on digital literacy. Lastly, the project had a component that included the development of digital resources such as the national digital resources lab and the National ICT Portal. 

Impact

Building on the outcomes of the GENIE programme Generalization of Information and Communication Technologies in Education) launched in 2006, well before the pandemic, the Ministry of Education enabled about 600,000 young people to continue learning through an online platform during the school closures. Another significant achievement of the program was that it was inclusive to ensure education delivery to  students with special needs during the pandemic,
