Greening Education

Created On November 25, 2023 Last Modified On April 28, 2024
Context and Issue

In response to the climate change challenges, UNESCO's Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been given priority in recent times. ESD, through its life-long learning approach, aims to equip the learner regarding the significance of sustainability. ESD aligns itself with STEM education to develop a foundational understanding of the existing challenges related to sustainability.

Solution

Greening Education is a whole-school approach to integrating education for sustainable development (ESD) into all aspects of education, from policies and frameworks to learning environments and curricula. It prioritizes hands-on and play-based learning and aims to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, values, and behaviors needed to address the climate crisis and other sustainability challenges. Some activity-related components under this are Greening Policies, Greening Schools, Greening Learning, Greening Capacities, Greening Communities, and Collaboration and Partnerships.

Impact

The projects under the greening education are still in the process, as the timeline is between 2023 and 2025. The impact would be more explanatory when evaluation reports of this particular set of interventions are available.

Analysis

As climate challenges become more frequent, the children must understand the significance of sustainable practices they can learn in a collaborative environment. At the government level, there is a need to promote awareness regarding greening schools and other green practices.
