The Learning Passport

Created On November 20, 2023 Last Modified On April 29, 2024
Context and Issue

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent school closures highlighted significant challenges in delivering effective remote education. This crisis underscored the importance of technology in addressing evolving educational challenges. In response to this urgent need, UNICEF and Microsoft collaborated to develop the Learning Passport initiative. Utilizing Microsoft Community Training tools, this initiative offers digital learning content aligned with national curricula, providing innovative educational solutions amidst the pandemic-induced disruptions.

Solution

The Learning Passport, a collaboration between UNICEF and Microsoft Community Training, provides flexible access to quality education through an online, mobile, and offline platform. It can serve as a primary learning management system or complement existing platforms. Designed for areas with limited internet connectivity, it offers local and global content to support learning. A curated library of Open Educational Resources and content from leading companies enhances the learning experience.

Impact

The application of the Learning Passport in each country is unique and tailored to specific needs. For instance, in Brazil, two platforms have been made available: "1 Million Opportunities" for students and another for educators, including indigenous teachers. These platforms aim to foster the acquisition of transferable skills among adolescents and youth while aiding their transition from education to the workforce. In another region, Syria, UNICEF introduced the concept of the Learning Cinema as part of the Learning Passport initiative following the earthquake earlier this year. Unlike the traditional image of individual learners using tablets or laptops, the Learning Cinema utilizes projectors. It involves mobile teams of trained teachers equipped with a laptop, a projector, and a portable power source. Through this setup, educational videos are presented, accompanied by interactive activities to support children's continued learning and provide them with mental health support.

Analysis

Each country's experience with the Learning Passport is unique, as it is a dynamic solution that caters to learning in diverse contexts, adapting to the specific needs and circumstances of different regions and populations.
