Created On November 25, 2023 Last Modified On April 29, 2024
Context

Uwezo Uganda has partnered with the Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education (LGIHE) to facilitate the implementation of the Assessment of Life Skills and Values in East Africa (ALiVE) program in Uganda. ALiVE is part of the Regional Education Learning Initiative (RELI) in East Africa, which comprises over 70 organizations across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The initiative aims to enhance learning outcomes for all children by focusing on life skills and values assessment.

Solution

ALiVE targets adolescents aged 13 to 17, both in and out of school, focusing on four key competencies: Self-awareness, Collaboration, Problem-solving, and Respect. The program has three main objectives: to generate evidence on life skills and values through the development of context-specific assessment tools, to raise awareness among stakeholders about the importance of these competencies, and to build local capacities and foster a regional community of learning and practice on life skills and values measurement.

Impact

In March 2022, Uwezo Uganda and LGIHE conducted a training session for enumerators and a full district pilot in 20 villages/enumeration areas in the Buikwe district. This pilot aimed to prepare for the household-based assessment scheduled for August 2022 in 20 districts across Uganda. The pilot assessment involved 20 community volunteers from the Buikwe district and 10 student teachers from Makerere University, supported by a team of trainers and technical members from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Analysis

Overall, the ALiVE program has the potential to generate valuable insights, raise awareness, and build capacities for measuring and promoting life skills and values among adolescents, thereby contributing to their overall well-being and success.
