Context and Issue

In Mexico, managing the opening and closing of approximately 140,000 public and private schools poses significant challenges, particularly amidst the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing the need for effective decision-making support, the "Back to School Index" project has been initiated. This project aims to leverage public data to develop an interactive platform offering guidance and support for school management.

Solution

The "Back to School Index" project provides decision-makers and school communities with a comprehensive model that offers diverse recommendations regarding the timing and manner of school reopening. By striking a balance between monitoring the epidemiological situation, assessing academic learning levels, and evaluating infrastructure conditions, the platform aims to facilitate informed decision-making. Moreover, it considers demographic factors that may marginalize students from accessing remote education effectively.

Key Insights

Through the collaboration of Mexicanos Primero at the national level and Mexicanos Primero in the state of Sinaloa, the project seeks to advance the restoration of children's educational rights. The initiative aims to address the multifaceted challenges faced by schools and communities in Mexico by prioritizing a balanced approach that respects the right to health and education.

Analysis

The key barrier in this case would be the government's commitment to developing the management system that ensures the implementation of such an intervention. Another main concern would be the project's long-term sustainability, especially regarding the financial side.
