Context and Problem

Communication passports are an effective tool designed to support individuals who cannot easily communicate for themselves. Individuals with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) struggle the most. Additionally, adults and individuals with temporary and progressive communication challenges also face these issues, particularly those experiencing dementia, severe language delays, or those in hospital settings. Thus, having an effective solution to ease the communication challenges for such individuals is essential.

Solution

A communication passport is a personalized, visually appealing booklet or digital resource that includes essential biographical, medical, and personal information. Designed to be easy to follow, passports use large fonts, vivid colors, and engaging images to enhance readability and user engagement. Information is tailored to the individual, ensuring it highlights their preferences, needs, and how others can communicate effectively with them.

Traditionally, passports are 10-20 page booklets, but they have evolved into various formats, including mini-pamphlets, short videos, and smartphone applications. Templates and guidelines are freely available through the CALL Centre website, with options for further customization using personal pictures and details. The cost of creating passports is minimal, as templates can be printed and laminated at little to no expense.

Impact

Communication passports empower individuals and families by providing a tool that reduces frustration and repetition while improving communication effectiveness. They ensure newcomers, service providers, or caregivers can quickly learn how to interact with the individual, promoting understanding and independence. The passports are versatile, suitable for both low-tech (hand-drawn images) and high-tech (apps) formats, and are accessible to people across various ages and settings.
