Context and Issue
The Institute of International Education’s Higher Education Readiness program (HER) addresses the low participation of young women from underserved communities in higher education. Policymakers globally grapple with enhancing access to quality education, particularly for marginalized groups, to promote socioeconomic development. Despite efforts, obstacles persist, hindering girls' access to university education due to financial constraints and lack of support.
Solution
HER provides a comprehensive pathway to university for 100 girls entering the 11th grade, offering scholarship support to complete secondary education and prepare for higher education. The program aims to refine an effective model for secondary school scholarships, addressing barriers to girls' university enrollment through targeted resources such as school fees, transportation, books, tutoring, and enrichment activities.
Impact
The HER program in Ethiopia has demonstrated successful pathways for young women from marginalized communities to pursue higher education. The program's effectiveness in overcoming barriers and fostering academic success is evident through contextualized quantitative and qualitative studies, impact evaluations, and student testimonials. Reports highlight best practices, lessons learned, and the multiplier effect of empowering girls on their families and communities.
